Canvas Painting with Tanya "You Are the Artist!"

Commemorative Painting for the Joe & Shelly Schwarz Cancer Center

It was an honor to be a part of this special day. The Groundbreaking Ceremony & Special Gift Announcement at the IU Health Cancer Center at IU North Hospital in Carmel, IN. The Guest of Honor, Shelly Schwarz, donated $10 Million to the center in memory of her husband, Joe Schwarz. The ceremony included her family, Mayor Brainard of Carmel, IU Health Board of Directors, IU Health Executives, IU North Board of Directors and IU North Executives.

Days before this special event, I painted a 24" x 30" canvas of an empty tree in black, brown & metallic copper. I added Joe's name in script to the trunk of the tree in dedication to him. My friends (and event partner) Renditions Fine Art, Framing & Photography, added the beautiful frame.

On the day of the event, I set up my large easel with the painting, and a table with my paint basket, brushes, the color chart for cancer ribbons, and paint pens. The guest of honor, Shelly Schwarz, painted on the first ribbon - burgundy/ivory in memory of her husband who passed away from throat cancer. All of the guests followed with various colors to honor a friend or family member.

I personally added a periwinkle ribbon for my husband, pink for my mom, black for my dad, orange for my mother-in-law, dark blue for my father-in-law, orchid for a friend, and plum for caregivers.

The finished piece will hang in the new cancer center as a permanent, commemorative piece. How cool is that?!?!? I am incredibly lucky to have been asked to do this. Thank you so much to everyone at IU Health North for allowing me to be a part of this event!
